The President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Prof. Mathew Adamu, has reaffirmed the Council's commitment to strengthening food security, safeguarding public health, and promoting national development as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a message to commemorate June 12, Prof. Adamu joined Nigerians in celebrating the country's democratic journey, describing Democracy Day as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance and the collective responsibility of citizens to build a prosperous and resilient nation.
According to him, the Veterinary Council of Nigeria remains dedicated to its statutory mandate of regulating veterinary education and practice across the country through effective regulation, accreditation of training institutions, licensing of practitioners, and enforcement of professional standards.
"The Veterinary Council of Nigeria remains committed to its statutory mandate of regulating veterinary education and practice in Nigeria. Through effective regulation, accreditation of training institutions, licensing of practitioners, and enforcement of professional standards, the Council contributes significantly to national development," he said.
Prof. Adamu noted that the Council's activities support government efforts to strengthen food security, prevent and control zoonotic diseases, improve livestock productivity, promote animal welfare, and facilitate safe trade in animals and animal products.
He stressed that these contributions are critical to economic growth, job creation, and the overall well-being of Nigerians.
"As we celebrate this year's Democracy Day, I urge all citizens to continue supporting democratic institutions and embracing the values of patriotism, peace, and responsible citizenship," he added.
The VCN President expressed optimism about the future of the country, saying that collective efforts would help build a stronger livestock sector, a healthier population, and a greater Nigeria.
He also extended his congratulations to Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day.
