The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has called on Nigerians to strengthen democratic values, embrace active citizenship, and promote national unity as the country commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day.
Issa-Onilu made the call in a statement marking the June 12 celebration, describing the date as a historic symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their pursuit of democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to him, in the Deputy Director Media and Communication, Paul Odenyi, democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, offering citizens the opportunity to freely elect their leaders, hold public officials accountable, and participate meaningfully in national affairs.
"Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges," he said.
He added that democracy provides every citizen with a voice and remains the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress.
The NOA Director-General stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, noting that it requires sustained citizen engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of diverse opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the collective good.
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and all forms of conduct capable of undermining national cohesion and democratic institutions.
"As the agency charged with promoting civic values, patriotism, and national consciousness, the National Orientation Agency remains committed to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship," he stated.
Issa-Onilu also commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, media practitioners, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence across the country.
He called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to renew their confidence in the nation's democratic journey and work collectively towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
The June 12 Democracy Day is observed annually in honour of the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria and serves as a reminder of the country's commitment to democratic principles and national development.
