The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that ongoing rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation are progressing steadily and remain on schedule for completion in July 2026.In a statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN disclosed that the project, which commenced in March, has reached a critical phase with the installation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment currently underway.
The company also revealed that two 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units. Upon completion, the upgrade is expected to boost the substation’s capacity by an additional 60MVA, significantly enhancing power transmission capability in the area.
To cushion the impact of the rehabilitation works, TCN had earlier deployed two mobile transformers to ensure that Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies continue to supply electricity to their customers, thereby averting a total blackout.
According to TCN, the overhaul will address recurring breakdowns and reduce downtime associated with the ageing GIS infrastructure, ultimately improving power reliability.
The company, however, acknowledged the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers during the upgrade and appealed for patience, noting that the project is aimed at delivering long-term benefits.
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to expanding transmission capacity nationwide to meet the growing demand for electricity.
