The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an official statement addressing a trending video and public concerns surrounding an incident involving its patrol team from the RS7.14 Central Business District (CBD) Unit Command on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
According to the Corps, the incident occurred during a routine traffic enforcement operation along the CBD axis in Abuja, where a vehicle was lawfully intercepted for traffic violations, including overloading and failure to use seatbelts.
The FRSC, according to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander, Osondu Ohaeri, on Sunday, stated that while officers were carrying out standard enforcement procedures, the driver became non-compliant and deviated from lawful directives, creating a situation that drew public attention and heightened tension in the area. The development, it noted, led to the gathering of a crowd, raising concerns about possible disorder.
The Corps firmly denied allegations circulating online that its personnel assaulted or threatened the driver or any occupant of the vehicle. It clarified that the individual seen in the viral video holding an iron rod is neither affiliated with the driver nor the FRSC, but a passerby whose actions have been misinterpreted.
Emphasising its commitment to professionalism, the FRSC said its officers demonstrated restraint and emotional intelligence throughout the incident. It explained that the decision to de-escalate the situation and disengage was taken in the interest of public safety, particularly given the volatile nature of the crowd.
“The action taken should not be misconstrued as weakness or a compromise of enforcement standards, but rather a strategic approach to prevent escalation, safeguard lives, and maintain public order,” the statement read.
The Corps reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring road safety while upholding professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights. It also urged members of the public to disregard misleading narratives and continue to cooperate with law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties.
