The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has highlighted ongoing federal infrastructure projects across Ebonyi State and the Southeast, describing them as evidence of President Bola Tinubu's commitment to inclusive development and regional integration.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, on Sunday, Umahi spoke on Saturday while leading a Federal Government delegation, headed by the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on an inspection tour of ongoing federal road projects in Ebonyi State.
The minister said the Southeast remains grateful for what he described as unprecedented infrastructure investments under the Tinubu administration and disclosed that the region would formally demonstrate its appreciation for the President on Monday.
During the inspection of sections of the Calabar-Abuja corridor, Umahi explained the significance of a major flyover being constructed along the Trans-Sahara Super Highway route, noting that it would eliminate traffic conflicts at a critical junction.
He also revealed that the Federal Government had made provisions in the 2026 budget to construct an 18-kilometre link road connecting the corridor directly to the Ebonyi State capital.
Despite funding constraints, Umahi assured contractors that work on ongoing projects would continue uninterrupted, stating that the government remained committed to meeting its financial obligations.
According to him, the administration is targeting the commissioning of the flyover project by December, with the project valued at approximately ₦25 billion.
The minister said the projects represent only a fraction of the infrastructure initiatives being executed across the Southeast, adding that residents of the region have begun to see tangible evidence of inclusion in federal development programmes.
He disclosed that a ₦668 billion contract for the Trans-Sahara Super Highway had already been awarded, with construction progressing steadily despite the rainy season. According to him, the project has reached about 28 per cent completion.
Umahi described the highway as a strategic economic corridor that would connect Nigeria to neighbouring countries while boosting trade, agriculture and industrial development across several states.
Tracing the history of the project, he said the corridor was originally conceived during the colonial era but had remained unrealised for decades until the current administration revived the initiative.
The minister also highlighted progress on President Tinubu's four flagship infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, and the Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Abuja Corridor.
According to him, the projects are designed not only to improve transportation but also to stimulate economic growth through investments in agriculture, power, housing, manufacturing, irrigation and renewable energy.
Umahi argued that infrastructure development remains one of the most effective tools for driving economic expansion, creating jobs and attracting investments.
He further cited completed and ongoing projects across Ebonyi and neighbouring states, including bridges, flyovers, dual carriageways and the Dangote Tax Credit Road Project, as evidence of the Federal Government's commitment to the region.
The minister said the Southeast now enjoys greater inclusion in federal infrastructure investments and expressed confidence that the region's developmental needs are receiving increased attention.
On project quality, Umahi warned contractors against substandard work, stressing that the Federal Government remains committed to delivering durable infrastructure through strict adherence to engineering standards.
He disclosed that the 51-kilometre Okposi-Ohaozara-Ukawu-Cross River road project, valued at ₦53 billion, is nearing completion, with one section over 90 per cent completed and another at about 60 per cent completion.
The minister also announced that the extension of the road to Akam, where the newly approved South-East Army Depot is located, has been captured in the 2026 budget.
In addition, he revealed that more contractors have been mobilised to work along the Enugu axis, while plans are underway for the construction of a new flyover at Okposi to improve traffic flow and connectivity in the area.
