The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has applauded the Government of Sierra Leone and President Julius Maada Bio for facilitating the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to the country.
ECOWAS, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said Koroma’s return marked an important development in efforts to promote national reconciliation, unity and sustainable peace in Sierra Leone.
The regional bloc noted that the former president’s return followed the Sierra Leonean Government’s decision to withdraw charges against him in the interest of fostering reconciliation and strengthening national cohesion.
According to the Commission, the development represents a positive step towards consolidating peace and stability in the country.
ECOWAS also acknowledged the contributions of regional leaders, with special recognition for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria for his leadership and support in hosting Koroma during his stay in Nigeria.
The Commission commended President Tinubu for his role in facilitating the former Sierra Leonean leader’s safe and smooth return home.
ECOWAS reiterated its commitment to supporting member states in advancing peace, political stability, democratic governance and regional integration across West Africa.
