President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently has the strongest strategic pathway to re-election in 2027, despite the growing political challenges posed by Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a new report by ADSC META has stated.
The report, signed by the organisation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, examined the political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with emphasis on governance performance, party structures, coalition dynamics, voter behaviour, economic conditions, institutional influence and leadership capacity.
It identified Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the three major political figures shaping the emerging contest.
According to ADSC META, its assessment was based on the prevailing political realities rather than partisan considerations.
“Following an extensive review of governance performance, political structures, coalition dynamics, voter behaviour, economic indicators, institutional influence, and leadership capacity, ADSC META finds that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presently maintains the strongest pathway towards securing a second term in office,” the report stated.
Incumbency gives Tinubu edge
The report identified presidential incumbency as Tinubu’s biggest advantage heading into the election.
It noted that incumbency provides significant political benefits, including national visibility, access to state institutions, policy influence, media exposure and an established nationwide presence.
ADSC META also credited Tinubu with considerable experience in political coalition-building, alliance management and strategic organisation, noting that his role in the development of the APC remains a significant political achievement.
The report said the ruling party currently has an extensive political network comprising governors, legislators, local government structures, political stakeholders and strategic alliances across the country.
“These structures provide a formidable electoral foundation,” it stated.
Economic hardship remains a major risk
Despite its assessment in favour of Tinubu, the report acknowledged the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians, including inflation, rising food prices and the effects of fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms.
It said the economic challenges could become politically significant if Nigerians fail to see tangible improvements before the election.
However, ADSC META argued that voters could ultimately judge the administration based not only on present hardship but also on expectations of future economic conditions.
It said a reduction in inflation, improved infrastructure, increased investment, job creation and stronger economic confidence could potentially turn some of the administration’s current vulnerabilities into electoral advantages.
Obi's popularity faces structural test
The report described Peter Obi as a major force in the emerging political contest, particularly among young Nigerians, professionals, entrepreneurs and members of the diaspora.
It attributed his appeal to what it described as his reputation for fiscal prudence, administrative discipline, accountability and modest leadership.
According to the report, Obi’s major strength is the credibility he has built with his supporters and his ability to mobilise a movement beyond traditional political structures.
However, it said translating that popularity into a nationwide electoral organisation remains a significant challenge.
“National elections demand more than popularity,” the report stated, stressing the importance of grassroots mobilisation, nationwide political structures, coalition management, vote protection and organisational capacity across wards and polling units.
Atiku brings experience, national network
ADSC META also recognised Atiku Abubakar’s extensive political experience, national reach and knowledge of economic and executive affairs.
It said the former vice president’s strengths include political relationships, policy familiarity and long-standing engagement in national politics.
However, the report identified generational change as one of the challenges facing his political ambitions, noting that some younger voters increasingly seek new leadership and alternatives to the established political order.
Opposition unity could reshape contest
The report identified opposition unity as a critical variable that could significantly affect the 2027 election.
According to ADSC META, a divided opposition would strengthen Tinubu’s position by dispersing votes and weakening the emergence of a unified alternative.
Conversely, it said a disciplined opposition coalition could substantially alter the political dynamics ahead of the election.
Comparing the three leading contenders, the report said Tinubu’s major strengths lie in political organisation, coalition-building, negotiation and institutional management.
It identified Obi’s strengths as fiscal discipline, administrative efficiency, accountability and reform-oriented governance, while Atiku’s key advantages include executive experience, economic policy familiarity and national political engagement.
Tinubu remains candidate to beat
ADSC META concluded that, based on current political realities, Tinubu remains the candidate with the clearest institutional pathway to victory in 2027.
It, however, cautioned that the assessment should not be interpreted as a prediction of an inevitable victory, noting that economic conditions, political alliances and public opinion could change before the election.
“The road to 2027 remains open. The opposition still possesses opportunities to redefine the contest,” the report stated.
It added that, while electoral outcomes could not be predetermined, Tinubu’s incumbency, party structure, coalition-building capacity, institutional reach and level of electoral preparedness currently place him ahead of his major challengers.
The report was signed by Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, President and Chief Executive Officer, ADSC META.
