The Nigerian government on Tuesday confirmed the death of a Nigerian medical graduate, Miss Nnani Adaobi Marian, who reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a Russian aerial attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
A statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Tuesday, said the 23-year-old was a graduate of and expressed profound sadness over her death, describing it as a tragic consequence of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The ministry said it was working with relevant authorities, as well as Nigeria's diplomatic missions in Ukraine and Germany, to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide consular assistance to the deceased's family.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to Marian's family, friends, colleagues and the Nigerian community, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul and for strength for those mourning her loss.
The government also renewed its appeal for an end to the conflict, expressing concern over the continued loss of civilian lives.
"Nigeria urges all parties to embrace dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter," the ministry said.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of civilians have been killed or injured, while millions have been displaced. The conflict has also affected foreign nationals, including students, many of whom were studying in Ukraine before the war.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad and will continue to monitor developments while providing support through its diplomatic missions.
