The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC) has organised a regional seminar for judges of the Lagos State High Court as part of efforts to strengthen judicial understanding of Nigeria's evolving electricity market and its regulatory framework.
The seminar, held in Lagos on Monday under the theme, "Nigeria's Electricity Market in Transition: Law, Regulation and the Courts," brought together judges and key stakeholders to examine the legal and regulatory implications of ongoing reforms in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Speaking at the event, NERC Chairman, , said recent reforms had ushered in a new phase of electricity regulation, with oversight of electricity markets now transferred to 16 states.
He said the seminar was designed to equip judges with a deeper understanding of the technical and legal issues shaping the power sector to support effective adjudication of electricity-related disputes.
"Our objective is to ensure that My Lords are familiar with the intricacies and technical nature of the power sector. We look forward to engaging with you and sharing deeper insights into an industry that is critical to Nigeria's economic development," Oseni said.
Representing the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, described the seminar as an important initiative that would enable judges to engage directly with industry experts and better appreciate the legal issues arising from ongoing electricity reforms.
He said such engagements would strengthen the judiciary's capacity to deliver decisions that support the country's evolving power sector.
Also speaking, , representing the Chief Judge of Lagos State, , encouraged participants to actively engage with resource persons and broaden their understanding of the changing electricity landscape.
The seminar featured presentations on key aspects of the electricity market, including the legal and regulatory implications of decentralisation and tariff regulation in a multi-level electricity market.
According to NERC, the Lagos event is the first in a series of regional seminars aimed at enhancing judicial capacity and promoting a common understanding of the legal and regulatory framework underpinning Nigeria's transition to a decentralised electricity market.
