The Federal Government has condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa, describing the incidents as unacceptable and a disturbing indication of growing hostility towards foreigners.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government identified one of the victims as Emeka Charles Iroegbu, who was allegedly killed by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on June 28, 2026, during a reportedly brutal interrogation. It also recalled the unresolved extra-judicial killing of Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong on April 20, 2026, allegedly involving the same officers, noting that no arrests have been made despite the identities of the suspects being known.
The second victim, Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as Big Joe, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on the same day.
According to the Ministry, the killings have heightened concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa amid rising xenophobic attacks and the increasing profiling of Nigerians as criminals.
Nigeria also criticised recent comments reportedly made by a South African government spokesperson linking Nigerians to illegal drug activities, describing the remarks as inflammatory, unprofessional and capable of inciting hatred against innocent members of the Nigerian community.
The Federal Government called on South African authorities to immediately investigate the killings, prosecute those responsible, and ensure justice for the victims. It maintained that all persons, regardless of allegations against them, are entitled to due process and a fair hearing.
While expressing sympathy to the bereaved families, the Government assured Nigerians that it would continue diplomatic engagements with South Africa until justice is served.
The Ministry advised Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, avoid areas experiencing violence, and cooperate with Nigerian diplomatic missions. It also confirmed that the evacuation of registered Nigerians wishing to return home is ongoing.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful diplomacy, the Federal Government urged Nigerians at home not to engage in retaliatory actions, stressing that dialogue remains the preferred path to resolving the crisis. It, however, warned that if attacks on Nigerians continue, Nigeria would consider all lawful diplomatic options to protect its citizens and defend their rights.
