Nigeria’s Diplomatic Presence Shines in Beijing as Embassy Honours Victorious Football Team In Beijing

 

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beijing, China, has hosted a special reception in honour of the Nigerian football team that emerged champions at the just-concluded Flames Beijing World Cup tournament, in a move aimed at promoting sports diplomacy and strengthening engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora.

The amateur community-based football competition, which attracted participants mainly from the African diaspora and other international amateur teams in China, saw the Nigerian side deliver an impressive performance to clinch the 2026 tournament title in what officials described as a historic achievement.

According to a statement on Abuja on Thursday by the Spokesperson,

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the reception brought together officials of the Nigerian Embassy, members of the Nigerian student community, supporters, and the victorious team in a celebration of national pride and unity.

Speaking at the event, embassy officials said the gathering was organised to honour the team for making Nigeria proud through discipline, patriotism, resilience, and excellence on the international stage.

They noted that the team’s success went beyond football, describing the players as ambassadors of Nigeria’s positive image abroad and symbols of unity within the international community.

According to the officials, the players displayed exceptional teamwork, determination, and discipline throughout the competition, helping to elevate Nigeria’s image among participating countries and international observers.

In her remarks, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, Mrs. Ikerionwu Chiegonu Edith, congratulated the team on what she described as an extraordinary achievement.

She said the victory reflected the resilience, unity, and determination associated with the Nigerian spirit, adding that football remains a powerful tool for connecting people across cultures and continents.

Mrs. Edith also commended the players for their dedication and sacrifices, assuring them of the Embassy’s continued support for initiatives that promote Nigeria’s image and foster stronger relations among Nigerians living in China.

Responding on behalf of the team, the captain expressed appreciation to the Embassy for recognising the players’ efforts and supporting them throughout the tournament.

He described the victory as historic, noting that it marked Nigeria’s first participation and triumph in the competition, while expressing hope that the achievement would encourage stronger collaboration between Nigerian students in China and the Embassy.

The team’s coach also praised the support received from the Embassy, assistant coaches, medical volunteers, supporters, and members of the Nigerian community in Beijing.

He acknowledged that there were organisational shortcomings during the opening ceremony of the tournament but accepted responsibility and pledged improved coordination in future competitions.

The Embassy also used the occasion to encourage Nigerians residing in China to maintain regular communication with the mission, particularly on immigration and passport-related matters, stressing that many consular challenges could be avoided through timely engagement.

Also speaking at the event, a representative from the Office of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Raymond Na’anlep Delmut, commended the Embassy for promoting citizen engagement and celebrating Nigerian excellence abroad.

He also presented one of his authored books to the Embassy leadership as part of efforts to encourage intellectual and cultural diplomacy among Nigerians overseas.

The event highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging sports diplomacy, youth engagement, and cultural exchange as tools for strengthening bilateral relations and promoting the country’s positive image internationally.
