The Federal Government has announced that Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, identified as the second-in-command of the terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS), was killed in a joint military operation conducted by the Nigerian Armed Forces and the United States Africa Command in the Lake Chad region.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa on Saturday, the operation was carried out in the early hours of Saturday following what was described as meticulous planning and successful coordination between the armed forces of both countries.
The statement said Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki had been linked to several recent attacks on military formations in Nigeria’s North-East and described his death as a significant breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
The ministry commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to national security and acknowledged the support of the Government of the United States in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
