The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged the support of the FCT Administration for the establishment of a proposed “Media City” in Abuja by DAAR Communications Plc.
Wike made the commitment on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Board and Management of the media organisation, led by its Chairman, Raymond Dokpesi Jr..
The Minister described the Media City initiative, proposed to be located in the Asokoro District, as ambitious but achievable, noting that it would be a landmark project and the first of its kind in Nigeria if realized.
“I want to partner with you over your ambitious media city project. It’s very ambitious but with commitment, you can achieve it,” Wike said in a statement by the Deputy Director, Press, Office of the Minister, adding that the project would enhance the image and global profile of the nation’s capital.
He also directed the FCT Department of Land Administration to work with DAAR Communications to resolve lingering land documentation issues concerning Plot 4241 in Asokoro, particularly disputes over land size and perimeter fencing.
Wike commended the organisation for its professionalism and longstanding contributions to national development, noting that it was the first media outfit to formally visit his office since he assumed duty.
The Minister further used the occasion to urge journalists to uphold factual, research-based, and non-partisan reporting, expressing concern over the spread of misleading information in the media.
“It is important that reporters verify facts before publication. Misleading reports create wrong impressions among citizens who deserve accurate information,” he said.
He also called on political actors to adhere to due process, stressing the need for accountability rather than blaming institutions such as electoral bodies and the judiciary.
Earlier, Dokpesi said the proposed Media City would boost media production technology, promote tourism, and create opportunities for small and medium-scale enterprises within the FCT.
He commended the Minister for previous interventions, including the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy for the organisation’s headquarters and efforts to halt indiscriminate rock blasting in Asokoro.
Dokpesi also lauded ongoing infrastructure development across key districts in Abuja, including Guzape and Asokoro, and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining a constructive relationship with the FCT Administration.
