The Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Reverend Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his death as a monumental loss to both the Church and the nation.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday day, Umahi said he received the news of the Bishop’s demise with “profound grief and a heavy heart,” noting that his passing marks the end of an era defined by selfless service, deep spirituality, and unwavering dedication to God.
He described the late Bishop as a spiritual father, moral compass, and a symbol of discipline and sacrificial leadership, whose impact transcended the Church and resonated across society.
“Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as a teacher of the Word and a shepherd of souls, reaching people from all walks of life with compassion, wisdom, and pastoral care,” Umahi stated.
The Minister added that at a time when society is in dire need of moral clarity and spiritual guidance, the Bishop’s death leaves a significant void. He, however, emphasized that the late cleric’s legacy would continue to inspire generations through the lives he touched and the faith he strengthened, particularly in Ebonyi State and beyond.
Umahi extended his heartfelt condolences on behalf of his family and the Federal Ministry of Works to the Catholic faithful, clergy, and religious of the Diocese of Abakaliki, as well as the immediate and extended family of the deceased.
He prayed that God grants the late Bishop eternal rest and gives all those mourning him the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
