Venezuela: ECOWAS Calls For Restraint, Inclusive Dialogue


The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for restraint, inclusive dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. and its people in the ongoing  developments, especially recent bombings by the United States of America (USA).

ECOWAS said it fully aligned itself with the statement of the African Union issued on 3 January 2026, that called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela. 

The regional body which expressed concerns about the recent happenings, stressed that while it recognized the right of states to fight international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, the international community should be reminded about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law.

The statement on Sunday reads in parts; "The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has followed with concern recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.


"While it recognizes the right of states to fight international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS wishes to remind the 

international community about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter. 

"ECOWAS fully aligns itself with the statement the African Union issued on 3 January 2026, that calls for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela. 

ECOWAS reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all states to respect the independence and territorial integrity 

of Venezuela. It expresses support to the people as they shape the future of their country through an inclusive process."
