Nigeria is seeking to strengthen its partnership with India by leveraging the Asian country’s technological advancement and youth engagement strategies to drive economic growth and inclusive development.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where he is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The summit provides an opportunity for Nigeria to explore partnerships in trade, investment, agriculture, technology, manufacturing and industrial development.
Shettima is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani; and Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.
Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025, strengthening its engagement with emerging economies through South-South cooperation and expanded economic and diplomatic relations.
According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Dr. Magnus Eze, on Friday, Nigeria’s participation at the summit will focus on exploring India’s experience in technology, artificial intelligence and the digital economy.
The statement said particular attention would be given to how technology could be deployed to create opportunities for Nigeria’s growing youth population.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said India’s achievements in using technology to engage young people offered valuable lessons for Nigeria.
She noted that agriculture, artificial intelligence, the digital economy and women’s participation in the technology sector were among the areas where Nigeria could benefit from India’s expertise.
The Minister said Nigeria was determined to leverage India’s technological capabilities and its “greatest strength” in engaging youths to promote innovation, economic growth and inclusive development.
