The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, has graduated 260 private guard operatives trained in modern security management and emerging security threats.
The operatives, drawn from 40 private security companies in the Federal Capital Territory, completed a five-day refresher course held from August 10 to 14, 2026 at the newly commissioned FCT Command Training Ground, Abuja.
Speaking at the passing-out parade, the FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu said the training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of private security personnel to effectively detect, prevent and report security threats.
He noted that the changing security environment required private guards to go beyond traditional duties of guarding premises and checking visitors.
According to him, operatives must be equipped to identify suspicious behaviour, control access, respond to emergencies, protect critical infrastructure, preserve information and maintain effective communication with relevant security agencies.
The Commandant described private security personnel as an important component of Nigeria’s national security architecture, noting that they are often the first to observe suspicious activities and security breaches.
He urged the graduates to remain vigilant and ensure that suspicious activities are properly documented and promptly reported to the appropriate authorities.
NSCDC to Sustain Training
The FCT Commandant said the refresher programme would not be a one-off exercise, stressing that the Command would sustain continuous training and retraining of private guard operatives to keep them abreast of emerging security threats and modern response strategies.
He also urged private security companies to invest in the welfare, equipment, remuneration and professional development of their personnel.
“Professional security requires professional treatment of security personnel,” he said, while stressing that companies could not demand professionalism from guards while neglecting their welfare and working conditions.
The Commandant further charged private security operatives to pay particular attention to the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure in the FCT.
He noted that Abuja hosts government institutions, diplomatic missions, financial institutions, telecommunications facilities, transportation infrastructure, businesses, residential communities and other strategic installations.
He warned that what might appear to be a minor security breach could escalate into a major incident if not detected and addressed promptly.
The graduates were therefore advised to understand the vulnerabilities of facilities under their protection, remain observant, maintain proper records and avoid compromising their duties for personal gain.
Call for Public-Private Security Partnership
The Commandant called for stronger collaboration between the NSCDC and private security companies, urging stakeholders to build partnerships based on trust, accountability, information sharing and mutual respect.
He said the NSCDC would continue to regulate, monitor, supervise and license private guard companies while providing professional guidance and capacity-building opportunities.
He commended the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for prioritising training and professional development within the Corps and the wider security sector.
He also appreciated the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria (ALPSPN), FCT Zone, instructors, facilitators and participating companies for their support.
The Commandant urged the graduating operatives to regard their certificates as a reminder of the responsibilities attached to their profession and to remain committed to lifelong learning.
He said their ability to prevent incidents, identify threats and protect lives and property would contribute to peace, security and development in the Federal Capital Territory and Nigeria.
