The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at the Yola, Osubi and Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, further strengthening Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation safety standards.
The achievement followed a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, from July 20 to 23, 2026, covering NiMet’s meteorological products and services provided to the aviation industry at the three airports.
The certification is in line with the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
According to the agency, the audit found NiMet’s services at the affected airports to be in conformity with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard.
NiMet also secured recertification for its aeronautical meteorological services at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
With the latest certification, NiMet now has ISO 9001:2015 certification covering aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian international airports.
The certification, which is valid for three years, will be subjected to annual surveillance and maintenance audits, with the next recertification scheduled for 2029.
In a letter dated July 26, 2026, addressed to Prof. Anosike, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the objectives of the surveillance audit were achieved.
Strohmeier said the audit involved a systematic assessment of NiMet’s processes, with particular emphasis on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
Following the successful audit, Certech issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s Quality Management System conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.
The agency described the achievement as significant because it marked the first time its aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports were subjected to an ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.
Reacting to the development, NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, commended the agency’s Quality Management System team for its commitment to improving operational standards.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, has been working round the clock to achieve this feat.
“We are not stopping here, as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” Anosike said.
