The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable electricity to Nigerians, announcing plans to invest in stabilising the national grid to reduce recurring system collapses and voltage fluctuations.
In a statement signed by Clement Ezeorah, Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations), Federal Ministry of Power, the Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, said the government was shifting from temporary interventions to a comprehensive overhaul of the country's transmission network.
Tegbe described a stable national grid as the foundation for achieving lasting improvements in electricity generation and distribution, stressing that the administration was committed to building a resilient transmission system through a measurable and time-bound programme.
According to the statement, the Ministry has constituted a Technical Working Committee on Grid Stabilisation to spearhead the initiative. The committee will bring together engineering and regulatory experts to address transmission bottlenecks, ageing infrastructure and the persistent grid failures that have disrupted electricity supply in recent years.
The committee is expected to collaborate closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to identify priority intervention areas across the national transmission network.
The planned investment will focus on reinforcing critical transmission corridors, expanding grid redundancy and modernising control and monitoring systems to minimise the frequency and impact of power outages.
Acknowledging public scepticism over previous commitments in the power sector, Tegbe said the administration understood that Nigerians would judge its performance by results rather than promises.
He stated that the government was not seeking "blind faith" from citizens but was prepared to be held accountable against clearly defined milestones.
The Ministry added that progress on the grid stabilisation programme would be communicated regularly through a coordinated information strategy aimed at keeping citizens, investors and other stakeholders informed as implementation advances.
