Applications for the 2026 UK Government Chevening Scholarships have officially opened, offering outstanding Nigerians and other eligible candidates the opportunity to pursue fully funded master's degree programmes at universities across the United Kingdom.
The application window runs from 4 August to 6 October 2026, according to a statement signed by Onyinye Madu of the British High Commission Communications Office and made available on Monday in Abuja.
The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, is designed to support individuals with strong leadership potential, influence and networking abilities. Successful applicants will join a global community of future leaders equipped with world-class education, professional networks and skills to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.
Head of the Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, Emma Hennessey, said the programme is seeking exceptional individuals committed to working with the UK to build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future.
She noted that Chevening is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion and encouraged applications from under-represented groups.
According to Hennessey, scholars are selected not only for their academic and professional achievements but also for their leadership potential, ability to build meaningful connections and commitment to creating lasting impact in their communities and globally.
She added that access to UK education, networks and experiences equips scholars with the tools needed to address shared international challenges, urging prospective applicants to reflect on how their experiences and ambitions align with Chevening's vision before applying.
Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as more than a scholarship programme, saying it offers beneficiaries the opportunity to become part of a global network of leaders committed to driving positive change.
Baxter said scholars benefit from world-class education, exposure to UK values and culture, and lifelong professional connections that enable them to tackle pressing global challenges and contribute to sustainable development.
He encouraged Nigerians with a clear vision for making meaningful contributions in areas of shared priority between Nigeria and the UK to apply.
Prospective applicants are required to submit their applications through the Chevening online application portal. They are also advised to review the programme's guidance and vision resources before applying to ensure they present competitive applications.
Since its establishment in 1983, the Chevening programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals from over 140 countries and territories, reinforcing the UK's commitment to developing future global leaders.
