Sierra Leone has commissioned the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre and the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi, in a move aimed at strengthening regional diplomacy, peace support operations and emergency response across West Africa.
President Julius Maada Bio, who currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, performed the inauguration on Saturday ahead of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, describing the projects as major investments in the future of regional cooperation.
The newly completed conference centre served as the venue for the ECOWAS summit, while the Logistics Depot is designed to enhance the regional bloc's operational readiness for peacekeeping missions, humanitarian interventions, disaster response and efforts to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
The event attracted several West African leaders and senior international officials, including President Adama Barrow of The Gambia, President José Maria Neves of Cabo Verde, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Sierra Leone's Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and ECOWAS Commission Vice President Damtien Larbli Tchintchibidja.
Addressing guests, President Bio said the conference centre would strengthen Sierra Leone's role as a hub for regional and international diplomacy.
According to him, the ECOWAS Logistics Depot would improve the Community's ability to deploy peace support operations, deliver humanitarian assistance and respond swiftly to emergencies across the sub-region.
"The Conference Centre is a strategic investment that positions Sierra Leone as a leading destination for regional diplomacy and international engagement," Bio said.
He added that the logistics facility would reinforce both Sierra Leone's and ECOWAS' commitment to promoting peace, security and regional integration.
In his remarks, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray said the commissioning of the depot marked the realization of a vision conceived more than 20 years ago.
He noted that the facility would strengthen the Community's peace and security architecture by providing the logistical capacity required for rapid responses to crises affecting Member States.
"The Logistics Depot is the realization of a vision conceived more than two decades ago. It reflects our collective commitment to strengthening ECOWAS' peace and security architecture and enhancing our capacity to respond swiftly to regional crises," Touray said.
The commissioning of the two facilities marks another milestone in ECOWAS' drive to deepen regional integration and improve collective security as the bloc continues to confront evolving humanitarian and security challenges across West Africa.
