The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reaffirmed its support for the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe's call for greater collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria's electricity sector, saying coordinated regulation and policymaking are vital to achieving a stable and reliable power supply.
The Commission disclosed this in a statement on Sunday following a stakeholders' workshop in Abuja themed, "Legal, Policy and Regulatory Harmonisation between Federal and State Institutions on the Decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)."
According to NERC, the Minister urged operators, regulators and policymakers at both the federal and state levels to strengthen cooperation in order to align regulatory and operational activities across the Nigerian Electricity Market (NEM).
He said improved coordination would help expand access to reliable electricity and support the Federal Government's drive for sustainable economic growth and national development.
Speaking at the event, NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, echoed the Minister's position, stressing that the success of the country's evolving multi-tier electricity market depends on effective collaboration among all institutions involved in the sector.
Oseni observed that electricity consumers are primarily interested in receiving steady and reliable power rather than the distinction between federal and state regulatory responsibilities.
He therefore urged stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, cooperation and the collective interest of the industry over institutional differences to improve service delivery nationwide.
To strengthen coordination, the NERC Chairman proposed reforms to the National Council on Power (NACOP) to enable more regular and targeted engagements with state commissioners responsible for power.
He said the enhanced platform would improve policy alignment, support effective implementation of reforms and provide a mechanism for addressing emerging challenges associated with the decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
NERC maintained that sustained collaboration among governments, regulators and market participants remains essential to building a more efficient, resilient and consumer-focused electricity market in Nigeria.
