The Federal Government has announced fresh investments in aviation infrastructure as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, commissioned the remodeled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).
The upgraded terminal, according to the minister, represents another step in the administration’s drive to modernize Nigeria’s airport facilities and enhance passenger experience, safety, and operational efficiency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Kano on Tuesday, Keyamo said the rehabilitation of the facility reflects the government’s commitment to repositioning the country’s aviation sector for global competitiveness.
He noted that Kano’s strategic importance as the commercial centre of Northern Nigeria informed the Federal Government’s decision to prioritize major aviation projects in the state.
The minister disclosed that President Tinubu had approved N46 billion for the reconstruction and resurfacing of the airport’s second runway, describing the project as a major boost to Kano’s ambition of becoming a stronger international aviation hub.
Keyamo further revealed that the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal had commenced, with contractors already mobilized to begin work.
He explained that the remodeling of the domestic terminal was part of a wider airport renewal programme aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing service delivery, and creating a more convenient travel experience for passengers across the country.
The terminal was named after late Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, a respected aviation pioneer from Kano State whose contributions played a significant role in Nigeria’s aviation development.
The ceremony attracted top government officials and aviation stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku; Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf; Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure; and other senior officials.
Kuku described the renovated terminal as a reflection of FAAN’s commitment to delivering modern airport facilities and improving passengers’ overall travel experience.
Ganduje also praised President Tinubu and Keyamo for prioritizing aviation infrastructure, stressing that the ongoing projects would further consolidate Kano’s position as a key commercial and aviation hub in Northern Nigeria.
