The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has granted Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), operator of the Kainji Hydroelectric Power Plant, access to commence the construction of two 330kV bays at the Kainji Transmission Substation in Niger State.
The formal site handover, which took place on June 5, 2026, marks the beginning of the Kainji Switchyard Units 1G3 and 1G4 Bays Project. The scope of work includes civil, electrical and mechanical installations, as well as testing, commissioning and other approved project activities.
According to TCN, the project will facilitate the evacuation of power from two additional turbines—Units 1G3 and 1G4—being installed at the Kainji Power Station. The turbines are expected to generate 110 megawatts each, bringing an additional 220MW of electricity to the national grid upon completion.
Speaking during the signing and handover ceremony, the General Manager, Materials Control and Stores, and Chairman of the Project Technical Committee, Engr. Abdulkadir Gwaram Adamu, described the event as a significant milestone in efforts to boost power generation and transmission capacity in the country.
He noted that the new bays would enable TCN to evacuate electricity generated by the additional turbines into the national grid once they become operational.
Adamu commended Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited for its commitment to improving electricity supply across Nigeria, noting that the project is being fully financed and executed by MESL at no cost to TCN.
"The successful execution of this project will further strengthen the nation's power infrastructure and support efforts to improve electricity delivery to consumers," he said.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2026.
In his remarks, the Chief Technical Officer of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Engr. Cleber Romao Grisi, thanked TCN for granting access to the site and assured stakeholders that the company would complete the project within the agreed timeline.
Other officials present at the handover ceremony included the General Manager (Business Development), Engr. Robert Bodam; General Manager (Transmission), Shiroro Region, Engr. Kabiru Suleiman; Assistant General Manager (System Electrical), Engr. Ebenezer Opadare; and Principal Manager (Transmission), Kainji Work Centre, Engr. Gbenga Akorede.
The project is expected to enhance power evacuation capacity from the Kainji Hydroelectric Power Station and contribute to improved electricity supply nationwide.
