The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year's Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
According to the Minister, June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria's democratic journey, symbolizing the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
Tunji-Ojo said the Federal Government remains committed to preserving democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance, noting that these principles remain central to the administration's agenda.
He stressed that democracy thrives in an atmosphere of peace and security, assuring Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, working closely with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property nationwide.
The Minister urged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day for reflection on the nation's democratic progress and to renew their commitment to responsible citizenship, national unity and lawful conduct.
"As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens," he said.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria's freest and fairest election.
The Federal Government wished all Nigerians a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day celebration.
