The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems as a key component of Nigeria's climate adaptation strategy.
The commitment was highlighted at the opening of the 3rd Annual Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Climate Change Conference held in Abuja on Monday.
The conference, themed "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Systems at the Frontline of Climate Change: Aligning NDC 3.0 with National Adaptation Priorities," brought together policymakers, development partners, state governments, technical experts and other stakeholders to explore strategies for integrating climate resilience into WASH programmes across the country.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, led the opening ceremony.
He was joined by the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dallah, the Director of Hydrology, Engr. Ngozi Abohwo, as well as State Commissioners for Water Resources and Sanitation and their representatives.
The gathering focused on aligning Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) with national adaptation priorities, while promoting sustainable and climate-resilient WASH systems capable of addressing the growing impacts of climate change on water resources, sanitation services and public health.
