Nigeria and India have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in defence, security, technology, education and sustainable development, as both countries seek to strengthen their strategic partnership and collaboration within the Global South.
The commitment was reiterated during a courtesy visit by participants of the 66th Course of India's National Defence College to Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
Receiving the delegation, led by Anvita Sinha, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, described Nigeria and India as long-standing partners bound by shared democratic values, historical ties and growing economic cooperation.
Ahmed said the visit provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration in key areas, including defence, security, capacity building, technology transfer and sustainable development.
He acknowledged India's support in military training and professional development, noting that such cooperation has contributed significantly to strengthening Nigeria's institutional capacity and regional security efforts.
During discussions, both sides examined Nigeria's foreign policy priorities, global geopolitical developments and regional security challenges, while exploring opportunities for expanded cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, border management and professional military education.
The Permanent Secretary also stressed the importance of stronger cooperation among developing countries and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to South-South collaboration through platforms such as BRICS and other multilateral arrangements.
He highlighted Nigeria's leadership role in Africa through the implementation of the African Union's Agenda 2063, regional peace initiatives, infrastructure development and economic integration programmes.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Manoj expressed appreciation for the warm reception and commended the enduring relationship between both countries.
He said sustained dialogue and cooperation between Nigeria and India would further strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to global peace, security and development.
The meeting ended with both countries reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in diplomacy, defence, security, education, technology and development.
