Following the success of the 5th African Natural Resources & Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS), the Africans for Africa (AFA) Initiative signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KNY Chemicals, a market leader in the East African chemical sector. This partnership aims to revolutionize the management of mining tailings and optimize chemical processing across AFA’s growing portfolio of projects.
Building a Pan-African Mineral Processing Hub
The collaboration brings together KNY Chemicals’ deep technical expertise in specialized mining reagents and processing chemicals with AFA’s investment framework for high-impact mining infrastructure. The partnership is designed to tackle one of the most critical challenges in the modern mining sector: the responsible and profitable management of tailings.
By leveraging KNY Chemicals’ regional leadership in Tanzania, the alliance will immediately focus on developing tailing projects in East Africa. The synergy will transform potential environmental liabilities into significant economic assets while simultaneously reducing the ecological footprint of mining operations.
A Commitment to Regional Integration
“The strength of the AFA ecosystem lies in our ability to connect leading African operators across different regions,” said Suleiman Zakari, Co-founder of the AFA Initiative. “KNY Chemicals represents the pinnacle of industrial chemical expertise in East Africa. By integrating their capabilities into our ecosystem we are creating a blueprint for efficient, circular mineral processing that spans the continent.”
The MOU outlines a roadmap for joint project development, focusing on the research and implementation of beneficiation pathways that utilize locally sourced chemical inputs. This approach aligns directly with AFA’s mission to drive industrialization by ensuring that the value-addition process remains within African borders.
“Partnering with the AFA Initiative offers a unique opportunity to apply our specialized mining chemical solutions on a pan-African scale,” said Simon Karunditu, Finance and Strategy Director, KNY Chemicals Ltd of KNY Chemicals. “We share a common vision: that Africa’s mining industry must evolve through innovation. By combining our chemical processing capabilities with AFA’s investment and technical infrastructure, we are setting a new standard for sustainable tailings management.”
The Africans for Africa (AFA) Initiative is a specialized institution dedicated to driving resource sovereignty across the continent. AFA operates the AFA Mining Fund I, a private equity vehicle designed to deploy capital into critical mineral projects that meet the rigorous criteria of the 51% Total African Benefit (TAB) model.
Based in Tanzania, KNY Chemicals is a premier provider of high-performance mining chemicals and processing reagents. As an industry leader in the East African region, KNY Chemicals is dedicated to developing sustainable, cost-effective chemical solutions that enhance the efficiency and environmental compliance of mineral extraction and processing.
