The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed a fatal lone road traffic crash involving a Toyota Hiace commercial bus along the Okene–Lokoja Road in Kogi State.
According to the Corps, the crash occurred at Aku community at about 9:20 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, involving a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD.
The statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, at the weekend, said the incident was reported to the FRSC at about 9:25 a.m., while rescue operatives from the RS8.34 Zariagi Unit Command arrived at the scene within 15 minutes to commence rescue operations.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicated that driver fatigue was the probable cause of the crash, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle.
A total of 22 persons were involved in the accident, comprising 21 male adults and one female adult.
The Corps disclosed that 16 persons died in the crash, including 15 male adults and one female adult, while six male adults sustained varying degrees of injuries, including bruises and head injuries.
According to the FRSC, the injured victims were evacuated to Specialist Hospital Lokoja and Osara Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Hankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims speedy recovery.
He also cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers, against fatigue-induced driving, night journeys, and excessive speeding.
The Corps Marshal stressed the importance of adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips, noting that fatigue impairs concentration and reaction time, thereby increasing the risk of fatal road crashes.
