The Federal Government has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with construction firms Hitech Africa Limited and Infiouest International Limited for the execution of key legacy road projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure renewal programme.
The agreements, signed through the Federal Ministry of Works at its headquarters in Abuja, cover four major highway projects across different parts of the country. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the Permanent Secretary, ministry directors, and representatives of the contracting firms.
Speaking at the event, Umahi described the signing as a major step in the Federal Government’s effort to transform the nation’s road infrastructure, noting that the projects are designed to boost economic growth, improve connectivity, and strengthen national integration.
According to a statement by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Mohammed A. Ahmed,, on Wednesday, the he said the projects are part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration and praised the President for translating campaign promises into visible developmental initiatives. The minister also commended the contractors for their professionalism and adherence to project specifications and timelines.
Umahi said the projects covered by the agreements include:
Calabar–Ebonyi–Abuja Superhighway, Section II (Ebonyi Border through Benue, Kogi and Nasarawa states)
Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, Section IV (Oyo State)
Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Section V (Akwa Ibom State)
Dualisation of Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Road, Section II (Gombe–Biu axis)
According to the minister, work is progressing on several sections of the legacy projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, which he described as a major economic corridor. He noted that Section V of the coastal highway passes through difficult swamp terrain in Akwa Ibom State, requiring extensive engineering works such as excavation, filling, and reinforced pavement construction.
He said the roads are being built to high durability standards and are expected to last up to 100 years with minimal maintenance.
Umahi also disclosed that the projects are being implemented under the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Financing (EPC+F) model, with the Federal Government providing 30 per cent counterpart funding while the balance will be sourced through structured financing arrangements. He added that the roads would eventually be tolled to ensure sustainability and return on investment.
Managing Director of Hitech Africa Limited, Dany Abboud, assured the government of the company’s readiness to complete the projects within, or ahead of, the 36-month timeline, stating that the firm would deliver to international standards.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Rafiu Adeladan, described the projects as evidence of President Tinubu’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s infrastructure, while Director of Highways, Bridges and Design, Musa Sa’idu, said the roads are central to the government’s strategic infrastructure development plan.
