The decision was reached at the end of an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) held on Sunday at the FCT Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
The strike, which began on April 20, 2026, was triggered by unresolved issues including the non-implementation of the 2025 Ministerial Committee report on teachers’ outstanding entitlements and concerns over the use of “vacancy” as a condition for promotion, as well as dissatisfaction with the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission.

Jethro; and State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ibukun Adekeye, issued after the meeting, the union acknowledged the intervention of the FCT Minister and reviewed proposals presented to address the lingering issues. Among the key commitments is the approval of a N5 billion monthly fund to settle outstanding entitlements and implement the 40 percent peculiar allowance for primary school teachers.
This includes N2 billion from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and N3 billion from the 10 percent IGR allocation to Area Councils.
On the contentious promotion policy, the Minister reportedly stated that he was previously unaware of the “vacancy” requirement but pledged to engage the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to resolve the matter and provide feedback to the union.
Following deliberations, the SWEC directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to resume duties from Monday, April 27, 2026.
The union, however, warned that it would reconsider its position if the FCT Administration fails to fulfill the agreed terms. It also stressed that no teacher or staff member should face victimization for participating in the strike.
The NUT commended its members for their solidarity and resilience during the industrial action, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for improved welfare and working conditions for teachers in the FCT.
