The European Commission has announced a €235 million humanitarian assistance package to support vulnerable populations across West and Central Africa, amid escalating conflicts, food insecurity, and climate-related crises.
According to the Commission, the funding will target people affected by armed conflicts, displaced populations, host communities, and those in hard-to-reach areas.
The allocation includes €75 million for the Central Sahel, over €72 million for Chad, €33 million for Nigeria, €22 million for the Central African Republic, more than €16.6 million for Cameroon, €4.8 million for Mauritania, and over €6 million for coastal countries. An additional €6.4 million will support regional humanitarian initiatives.
European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said the region is facing multiple, overlapping humanitarian emergencies driven by conflict, poverty, hunger, instability, and climate shocks.
“West and Central Africa is facing a storm of humanitarian crises,” Lahbib stated, recalling her visit to Chad where she witnessed widespread displacement and loss.
“For millions of people, humanitarian aid is not a choice—it is food, clean water, medicine, shelter, and education. The European Union will continue to stand as a reliable partner to save lives and bring hope.”
The Commission noted that the humanitarian situation in the region remains dire, with the epicentres of crises located in the Central Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.
These conflicts have triggered large-scale displacement within and across borders, with spillover effects extending into coastal countries.
The ongoing crisis in Sudan has also worsened conditions in eastern Chad, while separate but persistent emergencies continue in north-west Nigeria, parts of Cameroon, and the Central African Republic.
According to the Press and Information Officer, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Modestus Chukwulaka, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to addressing urgent humanitarian needs and supporting long-term resilience across the region.
