Benin Toll Gate Attack: Corps Marshal Hails Army, Police For Prompt Response, Orders Immediate Probe

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed profound appreciation to the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and decisive intervention following a mob attack on RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

The unfortunate incident occurred after a crash scene rescue operation around the Benin Toll Gate axis, during which two trucks reportedly collided, resulting in the death of one of the truck drivers and critical injuries to FRSC personnel.

One of the officers later succumbed to injuries despite urgent medical attention. In the aftermath of the crash, an angry mob besieged and vandalised the Unit Command formation; however, prompt response by security agencies,  helped to restore order and prevent further escalation.

The Corps Marshal, in a statement by the Assistant Corps Marshal Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Friday, condemned the attack on personnel and facilities of the Corps, describing it as deeply regrettable and unacceptable.

He reiterated that FRSC operatives were on lawful duty to save lives when the tragic crash occurred.

While commiserating with the family of the driver, the fallen officer and the entire FRSC workforce, the Corps Marshal has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote cause of the crash as well as the circumstances that led to the mob action.

He assured the public that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians and called on the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of FRSC activities in this regard.
