The Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has said that the forthcoming 4th edition of the African Gems and Jewelry exhibition & Conference/Gold & Gemstone Conference and Exhibition (AGJEC/GGCE) 2025, scheduled for November 26–28, 2025, in Lagos, is a platform to expand opportunities, deepen regional integration, and chart a future where Africa mineral wealth uplifts every member of the society.
The minister who spoke at a Pre-event press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, expressed optimism, because this year’s theme, “Accelerating Collaboration for Sustainable Gold and Gem Development in Africa”, is more than a slogan as it reflects a collective ambition to transform the sector and build enduring value for every African.
"Africa is blessed with nearly a third of the world’s mineral wealth, yet we claim only a small share of the global value these resources generate. This is not just a challenge—it’s an extraordinary opportunity for change and shared prosperity.
Alake, who spoke the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund, Fatima Shinkafi, said under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, his Ministry has been advancing bold reforms, building sector transparency, accelerating acquisition of geological data, supporting local refining and manufacturing, and formalising artisanal mining.
"Our commitment is also to safeguard our mining communities and environment. These efforts are intended to drive value addition, boost revenues, and position mining as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrial future," he noted.
According to the minister, gold and gemstones matter for so many, in creating jobs, empowering women and youth, and sparking new enterprises across the globe.
For instance, he stressed that one polished gem or handcrafted piece of jewellery can multiply in value, creating prospects far beyond the raw materials.
"We are pushing for responsible sourcing and certification so Nigeria shifts from an exporter of raw minerals to a leader in refined, beautifully crafted products.
"Regional integration is also at our core, this conference therefore presents a pathway to realising the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), building strong value chains and raising Africa’s voice in the global marketplace."
The minister commended the Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN) for ensuring inclusivity, assuring the group that his ministry will always support initiatives that strengthen communities, provide training, and foster safer, more collaborative mining environments.
"This year’s conference signals our intent to build structures for equitable participation. Technical sessions will address hurdles and showcase leading youth and women voices.
"Mentorship programs and workshops will equip more young Africans and aspiring women leaders. WIMIN’s leadership deserves special mention, they are tireless in elevating the roles of women, youth, and artisans in all parts of our sector.
"Furthermore, AGJEC/GGCE 2025 is more than an exhibition, it is a platform to expand opportunities, deepen regional integration, and chart a future where our mineral wealth uplifts every member of our society.
