The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has recognized twelve outstanding journalists from across the sub-region — including five from Nigeria — at the maiden edition of the ECOWAS Excellence Awards for Journalists held at the Coco Ocean Hotel in Banjul, The Gambia.
The landmark event, which forms part of activities marking the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary (ECOWAS@50), celebrated the pivotal role of the media in advancing regional integration, development, and democratic accountability.
The awards, presented in categories spanning television, radio, print, online journalism, photography, and videography, sought to spotlight compelling storytelling that enhances public awareness of ECOWAS initiatives and promotes shared values across the region.
ECOWAS President’s Remarks Delivered by Chief of Staff Representing the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, commended the Government and people of The Gambia for hosting the historic event and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to institutionalizing the awards annually.
“It is both a privilege and a pleasure for me to stand before you today in the vibrant and hospitable city of Banjul, The Gambia, for a truly landmark occasion: the inaugural edition of the ECOWAS Journalists Excellence Award Ceremony,” Mr. Kolley stated.
He emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping regional narratives: “The story of ECOWAS cannot be told without the storytellers — the journalists — who document our progress, question our shortcomings, and elevate the voices of our citizens."
Kolley noted that over 200 entries were received from across West Africa, reflecting the depth and dynamism of the region’s journalism sector.
“Journalists are not just chroniclers of events; they are agents of accountability, defenders of democracy, and catalysts for social change,” he added.
Mrs. Miatta Lily French, ECOWAS Permanent Representative to The Gambia, hailed the awardees for their excellence and commitment to public service.
“Through your work, you give voice to the voiceless and power to the public. The recipients showed originality, commitment, and tenacity,” she said. “This award underscores our commitment to building a resilient media ecosystem.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Hon. Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting of The Gambia, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Permanent Secretary praised the honorees and reiterated the country’s support for press freedom and regional cooperation.
“To the twelve outstanding journalists being honoured today, I extend heartfelt congratulations. Your voices have elevated critical narratives, amplified the concerns of communities, and helped shape a shared path toward peace, progress, and democratic resilience in West Africa,” the statement read.
The Ministry also called for renewed support for ethical journalism and innovation in media practice, emphasizing that the profession remains vital to inclusive development and regional integration.
ECOWAS Jury Selection Committee and renowned Gambian communications expert, Mr. Abdoulie Gassama, gave special remarks reflecting on the rigorous selection process.
“We are here to celebrate a shared commitment to the highest ideals of journalism — truth, clarity, integrity, and impact,” Gassama said.
He noted that the jury thoroughly assessed each submission to ensure the award truly reflects excellence and relevance.
“Your work is outstanding. You have turned stories into instruments of change. You have reminded us of the beauty and responsibility of journalism — not just to report, but to empower,” he added.
Gassama concluded by encouraging continued dedication to media excellence in pursuit of ECOWAS Vision 2050 — a people-centered, peaceful, and integrated region.

Other award recipients included Sankulleh Janko from The Gambia, Alexandria DJotan from the Republic of Benin, and several other distinguished media professionals from across ECOWAS member states.
Journalists Excellence Award was instituted to honor media professionals whose work significantly reflects the socio-economic impact of ECOWAS on citizens. It also reaffirms the Commission’s vision of building a transparent and inclusive West African community.
The inaugural awards followed a public call for entries between February 20 and March 20, 2025, across six categories. Submissions were reviewed by a seven-member independent jury chaired by Mr. Gassama.

As ECOWAS marches toward the goals of Vision 2050, the 2025 Media Excellence Awards not only recognized journalistic excellence but reaffirmed the central role of the press in safeguarding democracy, enhancing civic engagement, and promoting unity across borders.
