ECOWAS, Partners Transfer West African Police Information System To Member States

The Economic Community Of West Africa States ECOWAS and it's partners have officially transferred the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) To Member States.

WAPIS constitutes a key platform for the collection, centralisation, and secure exchange of police data across the region.

The official handover ceremony of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) to national and regional authorities, held in Abuja, marks a decisive step forward in strengthening regional security cooperation. Implemented within the framework of a strategic partnership between ECOWAS, INTERPOL and the European Union.

A statement by the ECOWAS Directorate of Communication said that more than 700,000 digitised records have been integrated into the system as parts of efforts to stem transnational crime and terrorism.

"With more than 700,000 digitised records now integrated into the system, this initiative enhances the operational capacity of Member States in the fight against transnational crime and terrorism."

The statement stressed that active participation of high-level institutional representatives demonstrated the strong political will and collective commitment to ensuring the sustainability and effective ownership of this major regional initiative.
