The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has granted the government of Cape Verde $50,000 to help design a comprehensive Infrastructure Master Plan for the years 2025 to 2040.
The initiative will also include technical assistance from ECOWAS’s PPDU, ensuring that Cape Verde benefits from expert guidance in planning, technical reviews, and the implementation of the master plan.
The grant which was announced on April 3, 2025, according to a statement on Monday marks an important step towards enhancing the nation’s infrastructure and improving connectivity in the region.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting in Praia, Cape Verde, attended by key ECOWAS officials, including Mr. Sediko Douka, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitisation; the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Cape Verde; and officials from the ECOWAS Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU).
At the presentation of the cheque, Mr. Douka, on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission’s President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, expressed his gratitude to Cape Verde for embracing the initiative.
He highlighted that master plan will enhance infrastructure services and drive economic growth, regional connectivity, and shared prosperity across West Africa.
“This support is part of ECOWAS’s broader commitment to assist its Member States in improving infrastructure delivery. We are here to support Cape Verde in developing a sustainable and effective infrastructure framework that will benefit its citizens for decades to come,” Mr. Douka remarked.
Also, during the session, the ECOWAS team met with Cape Verde’s Minister for Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, and Housing, discussing the collaborative efforts to create the country’s long-term infrastructure blueprint.
The $50,000 grant from ECOWAS is expected to boost formulation of the national infrastructure plan, which will set the strategic direction for the country’s development over the next 15 years.
